FILM/TV FROM THE PAST

Isabel Sanford was the first African American actress to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Isabel Sanford found her love for performing when she was just nine years old. In 1981, she made her mark in Black History.

Her role as Louise Jefferson on The Jeffersons became a classic and left a lasting impact on television. She was the first Black actress to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, with Quinta Brunson joining her in 2023 for Abbott Elementary.

Did she share the same traits as Louise Jefferson?

The Jeffersons debuted in 1975 and quickly became popular. As a spinoff of All in the Family, the show followed George and Louise Jefferson as they faced the ups and downs of being a successful Black couple.

Louise is calm and steady, often trying to keep George’s unpredictable actions in check. Still, her love for him never wavers.

Sanford told the Citizen Register that Norman Lear and the producers of The Jeffersons created the character with her in mind. At first, though, she was cast as Lionel’s aunt for just one episode of All in the Family.

“Originally, they only hired me for one episode of All in the Family, not as a regular. The idea was to establish that Lionel was living in the neighborhood,” the actress said. Producer John Rich loved her so much that he recast her as Louise.

Isabel Sanford’s mom was against her dreams of performing

How do you tell your religious mother that you want to perform? Isabel Sanford faced this question herself. “She didn’t approve of show business, period…They tried to discourage me, but if you don’t want to be discouraged, you don’t have to be,” Sanford told the Copley News Service in 1981.

Even her teacher saw her natural talent, and Sanford often pleaded with her mom to let her perform. In the end, she decided to follow her heart.

By 1965, Sanford was making a name for herself on Broadway, winning over audiences with her role in James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner. This was only the start of her career. She later played Matilda “Tillie” Binx in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.
