GloRilla is having a ’04 Pittsburgh Steelers type of year (Get it? She’s a Steelers fan, and that was their best season, 15-1).
On October 11, the Memphis native released her debut album, Glorious, which didn’t disappoint. The project has a wide range of sounds, something different fans can enjoy. However, a particular single featuring T-Pain embodies a certain ’00s nostalgic collaboration between two beloved genres.
“I LUV HER” is an ode to hip-hop and R&B collaborations that defined music from that era. From the beat to GloRilla’s verses and T-Pain’s singing, you’d think you were listening to the radio in ’06 with this song playing.
GloRilla – “Is it because you like my accent? (Is It?)”
The song begins with T-Pain singing, “You ain’t got to say a word/Keep givin’ me when I’m lookin’ for/I just got to tell everybody (Everybody)/I don’t want to keep it on the low/Godd*mn, I love her (Godd*mn, I love her).”
Then, GloRilla settles into her first verse as her Southern Memphis accent glides on the beat. Between her voice and T-Pains singing, the song is a hit in its own right.
“I feel like I’m in 2008 [crying emoji and two red hearts],” one person said in the song’s official audio video comments. Another said, “T-PAIN deserves more than flowers GODD*MN I LOVE HIM.”
In the early and mid-2000s, a song wasn’t topping the charts without T-Pain singing the hook. He held that status for years, giving many artists some of their best-performing singles.
When you listen to “I LUV HER,” it reminds you of “Shawty” (Plies featuring T-Pain) and “She Got It” (2 Pistols featuring T-Pain).
GloRilla’s debut album ranges from ‘feeling myself’ music to gospel sounds and this R&B-inspired collaboration with T-Pain. She’s the perfect example of where being authentic takes you.
