When Jimmy Gary Jr. landed his first television role as a private investigator on a 2005 episode of All My Children, it marked the beginning of a lengthy TV and film career. Just a few years later, he appeared in popular dramas, comedies, and more, such as Law & Order, Ugly Betty, and House of Cards.
In 2015, Orange Is the New Black‘s audience was introduced to Gary Jr.’s CO Felix Rikerson, a character who left a lasting impression in his 10-episode arc on the popular Netflix series. Some of his latest performances include roles in When They See Us, New Amsterdam, FBI: Most Wanted, and two films with the same July 25 release date: The Home, starring Pete Davidson, and Oh, Hi! starring Molly Gordon.
In our interview, the actor and proud father talks about his experience on the set of both films, his favorite role, and the importance of staying in contact with a child he saved from drowning while in Florida.
In the horror/suspense film The Home starring Pete Davidson, you portray a police officer. Can you describe the atmosphere on set during the filming of this movie?
The atmosphere on set was intense yet collaborative. We were diving deep into some heavy themes, and with Pete Davidson leading the way, there’s always a mix of emotion and humor. The crew was incredibly supportive, creating an environment that not only focused on the suspense but also allowed for creative exploration. It made for a thrilling and memorable experience.
You’re also in Oh, Hi! starring The Bear‘s Molly Gordon, which shares a premiere date with The Home. How would you describe this film to anyone interested in watching it?
Oh, Hi! is a heartfelt and quirky film that captures the essence of human connection. It’s about the unexpected relationships that form in the most ordinary circumstances. With Molly Gordon bringing her unique charm to the role, it’s a blend of comedy and emotional depth that resonates with anyone who’s ever felt a little lost or out of place. I think viewers will find themselves laughing and crying in equal measure.
You’ve starred in popular shows like Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black and NBC’s New Amsterdam. Which of these roles would you say was your favorite and why?
That’s a tough call! Each role taught me something different. However, I have to say my time on Orange Is the New Black holds a special place in my heart. The complexity of my character and the powerful stories we told about women in prison really pushed me as an actor. Plus, the camaraderie with the cast was unforgettable; we really functioned like a family.
You’ve portrayed various law enforcement roles, including an NYPD officer and a D.C. jail guard. Do you consult with real-life police officers or guards to ensure an accurate portrayal of your characters?
Absolutely! I believe in authenticity, especially when portraying law enforcement. I often reach out to real police officers and guards for insights into their day-to-day experiences. Their stories and perspectives help me create a more genuine portrayal, ensuring I honor their profession while also bringing my character to life.
While in Florida for your Film Acting Workshop, you saved a child from drowning. How important is it for you to maintain contact with the child and their family?
That experience was life-changing, not just for the child but for me as well. Maintaining contact with the child and their family is crucial. It’s a way to show that I genuinely care about their well-being and the impact of that day. It’s important to me that they feel supported and that there’s a positive connection that continues beyond that moment. It reminds us all of how community and compassion can make a difference.
