Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista are chaotic, witty brothers in new action comedy

Within 20 seconds of Prime Video’s trailer for The Wrecking Crew, premiering January 28, I was intrigued.

Former wrestler Dave Bautista and DC actor Jason Momoa play estranged half-brothers, James and Jonny, seeking answers after their father’s mysterious death. In the trailer’s opening scene, the two sit side by side, like kids in trouble at the principal’s office.

Detective Sergeant Karl Rennert (Stephen Root) is livid after they wrecked Hawaii’s streets. He says he refuses to have “two guys who look like they ate steroid pancakes for breakfast” turn his island into a battleground.

In classic action-comedy duo fashion, the responses to the insult were witty. “Detective, that is uncalled for,” said James, while Jonny follows up with, “Are you gaslighting us?”

Although they pretend not to know why a group is pursuing them, viewers see in the trailer that there’s method to their madness.

The synopsis reads: “As they set out to uncover the truth, buried secrets resurface and loyalties are tested, unveiling a conspiracy that can tear their family apart.  Together, they are ready to WRECK anything that gets in their way.”

Bickering brothers and explosions: The Wrecking Crew has it all

“You blew up my car!” “I blew up their car, and it landed on yours!”

The dialogue between Bautista and Momoa’s characters, as shown, added an instant humorous touch to the promo. Mixed between scenes of explosions and fights with Pat Benatar’s 1984 hit “We Belong,” playing, I found myself saying, “Oh, this is going to be good!”

It’s surprising that The Wrecking Crew is a streaming release and not in theaters. Typically, movies of this caliber, especially with stars like Momoa and Bautista, are box office hits. Its runtime is about 2 hours.

Usually, streaming movies, at least the productions I’ve watched, are always under 120 minutes. The cast features established and rising stars, such as Claes Bang, Temuera Morrison, Jacob Batalon, and others.

Angel Manuel Soto directs, with Dave and Jason also serving as producers.
