I hear so many people say they’re obsessed with their significant others. They mean it as a way to show their deep love for them. However, movies like A Thin Line Between Love and Hate dramatically showed me that you should never truly want someone to be obsessed with you.
“It’s just a movie. It’s only for entertainment,” is true for productions, but there’s always some realness in their plots. In the 1996 comedy thriller, Martin Lawrence plays Darnell Wright, a nighttime club manager who hopes to co-own the club where he works. Wright is a ladies’ man and loves the access he has to women. But only one woman pulls on his heartstrings: his childhood sweetheart, Mia Williams, played by the beautiful Regina King.
Settling down with her should be Darnell’s main focus, and it is by the end of the movie. However, it takes a close encounter with death and the danger of messing with another woman’s heart for him to realize that.
The woman who refuses to be denied: Brandi
Darnell is used to chasing women, but Brandi, played by Lynn Whitfield, is different. She’s wealthy, sophisticated, and used to being in control. Winning her over becomes a mission he can’t resist, yet for Brandi, falling for Darnell is no game.
He shows up at her realtor’s office with flowers and books a house tour of a crib she’s showing. At one point, Brandi even asks him, “What kind of game are you playing?” After she gives in, their relationship appears genuine (to her): they go to art shows, the club, horseback riding, and she buys him expensive suits.
Meanwhile, Darnell realizes he has deep feelings for Mia and drops every woman on his roster, including Brandi. That’s when her obsessive, broken-hearted side comes out, and he feels her wrath.
For Brandi, proximity isn’t enough; she wants to be in his skin. And when her access is denied, she resorts to extreme measures: showing up at his mother’s house and even faking an emergency (using Mia’s name) to lure him to the hospital.
For entertainment purposes, but here’s the real message
Playing with people’s emotions can have serious consequences. Being honest about your intentions while dating can save you from hurting others and vice versa. In A Thin Line Between Love and Hate, Darnell’s pursuit of Brandi nearly cost him everything.
While most people aren’t literally obsessed with their partners, the language isn’t just words to some. In real life, stuff like this happens all the time, and sometimes the outcome is deadly. I watch true crime series like For My Man and Fatal Attraction that detail incidents that stem from it.
