Chennedy Carter signed a training camp contract with the reigning WNBA champs, the Las Vegas Aces, on April 15, and everyone is talking about it.
I saw the announcement on Instagram and immediately thought how she’d make the team go from dominant to unstoppable alongside A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, and Jackie Young.
Carter last played in the WNBA in 2024 with the Chicago Sky, earning several Player of the Game honors and averaging 17.5 points per game, often called a “walking bucket.”
Last season, the point guard took her talents to Mexico after teams in the league opted not to sign her. There, she played for the Adelitas de Chihuahua, a team in the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP) Femenil.
What this training camp contract means for Carter
In my opinion, this is a huge opportunity for the former Chicago Sky player. Rumors flew about why Carter was out of the league last season and issues with her former team, the Atlanta Dream. Signing with the Las Vegas Aces gives her a chance to control her own narrative and show teams in the W that she’s here to play, win, and be part of something special.
There’s no denying Carter’s talents, and I don’t think there’s been an issue in that area. To get the chance to showcase those skills in sold-out home games (the Aces sold out their season ticket allotment for the 2026 season, marking their third consecutive), she needs to prove she can be a team player.
Why the Aces are the perfect fit for her
Aces star A’ja Wilson is one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Not just in the WNBA — both leagues. She loves to win and set records, but most importantly, she’s a leader who wants her team to give their all in every game. And when that doesn’t happen, she lets them know that that’s unacceptable. For example, last season, on August 2, 2025, the Minnesota Lynx beat the Las Vegas Aces 111-58.
It was a historic blowout that marked the largest road win and worst home loss in WNBA history. Wilson made it clear that if anyone on the team wasn’t embarrassed, they needed to leave. They turned things around, eventually going on a winning streak and becoming the 2026 Champs.
Carter can learn a lot about the importance of trusting your teammates and building a solid connection from A’ja, Chelsea, and the rest of the group. I hope this training camp contract leads to something bigger.
