Outkast’s influence on music—extending beyond hip hop—can’t be denied. That’s why the duo is celebrating a 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction nomination.
On February 12, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation announced that 14 performers have been considered for the prestigious honor. Among Outkast, Mariah Carey, Chubby Checker, and more have snagged nominations.
According to the press release, artists or bands become eligible for nomination 25 years after releasing their first commercial recording. Check out the complete list below!
Outkast influenced artists to be more authentic and creative
Outkast carved out their own unique path in an industry where conformity often reigns. The duo told stories through their music, painted pictures with their lyrics, and filmed mini-movies as music videos.
Their hits include “Hey Ya!” “So Fresh, So Clean,” “The Way You Move,” “Ms. Jackson,” “Player’s Ball,” and more. Formed in Atlanta, Big Boi and Andre 3000 opened a new lane of commercial exposure for the Southern hip-hop sound.
In 1994, they released their debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, and the single “Player’s Ball” gained popularity. Outkast won Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards.
2003 was an even better year for the group. Their fourth album, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, topped the Billboard 200 chart, is certified diamond, and won Album of the Year at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards.
What’s the Hall of Fame nomination timeline?
According to the press release, nominee ballots will be distributed to an international voting panel of 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals. The selection criteria include an artist’s impact on music culture, influence on other musicians who have followed, and the scope and longevity of their career and body of work.
