I didn’t know what to expect from The Drama starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. I just knew the marketing for the romance/comedy film was exceptional, which made me interested in seeing it.
Apparently, many film critics were intrigued, too, because when I checked its Rotten Tomatoes score, I saw a “Certified Fresh” sticker next to its current 77% rating. While the score is fresh and the performances are being praised, I did see mixed reactions about Zendaya’s character’s secret.
The Drama officially hit theaters in the United States on Friday, April 3. However, there was a Los Angeles premiere on March 17, and that’s when I noticed a shift in people’s attitudes towards the production, written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli.
There’s no shortage of drama in The Drama
Like everyone else, I predicted what Emma’s (Zendaya) secret or “worst thing” was. She, Charlie (Pattinson), and their friends go around the table admitting theirs, as seen in the trailer. However, viewers don’t hear what Emma did, or thought about doing, that made everyone look at her differently. That’s where our predictions come in.
I thought Emma might’ve kidnapped or held someone hostage in a basement (based on her fiancé and friends’ reactions), but of course, I was wrong. I’m not going to reveal her actual secret because that’s a major part of the movie, and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone.
Yet it’s not what I expected, and it might make some people a bit uncomfortable.
What moviegoers are saying about the film and Zendaya and Robert Pattinson
I believe the opinions of the audience (moviegoers who spend their hard-earned money on tickets) are as vital to Hollywood as those of critics. While scrolling on X (formerly Twitter), I saw many tweets saying the film wasn’t what people expected, but they enjoyed watching it. I also saw much praise for Zendaya and Robert Pattinson’s performances and the way The Drama was filmed.
There were also people who thought the film was “just okay” and wanted more out of the plot. I love Zendaya and think audiences should watch the film and form their own opinions.
