Flavor Flav made Paris Olympic headlines when the rapper declared himself the official hypeman of the women’s water polo team. The move has significantly impacted the sport’s visibility.
The Grammy award-winning rapper appeared poolside, embracing his role as the team’s hypeman. He wore a water polo cap and a Team USA waterproof clock necklace.
A deal announced earlier this month revealed that the 65-year-old will make multiple appearances at USA Water Polo events each year. The rapper will also use his social media presence to help the Olympic team reach and engage new audiences.
“This is one of the biggest things that I felt I could have ever done in life, outside of the other accomplishments I’ve made in music.” Flavor Flav told NBC Olympics in a recent interview. “By sponsoring a water polo team and helping these girls out, this is bigger than me winning a Grammy.”
How Flavor Flav got involved
An Instagram post in May sparked Flavor Flav’s connection with the women’s Olympic water polo team. Maggie Steffans revealed the hardships she and her fellow teammates went through. Making their Olympic dreams a reality wasn’t simple.
“Many of my teammates aren’t just champions but also teachers, physician assistants, coaches, business owners, and more,” she wrote. “Some may not know this, but many Olympians (myself included) need multiple jobs to support chasing the dream. Most teams rely on sponsors for travel, accommodations, nutritional support, rent or lodging, and simply living in this day and age.”
Flavor Flav commented, “As a girl dad and supporter of all women’s sports, I will personally sponsor you, my girl, whatever you need. My manager is in touch with your agent, and I will use all my relationships to help you. That’s a FLAVOR FLAV promise.”
The Public Enemy rapper pledged that his support for the team would be felt throughout Paris and beyond.
“I’m going to be bigger than any cheerleader they had in their life. I’m going to cheer this team into winning a gold medal.”
