Underdog NFL teams that came out on top in Week 5

There’s nothing like winning an NFL game that opposing fans and sports analysts swore you’d lose. Some even go as far as to say the loss would be a blowout, a complete embarrassment.

In Week 5, several underdogs silenced many doubters after winning their matchups, including the Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans. Let’s jump right into it.

Bryce Young started off rocky, but became the leader the Panthers needed him to be

I don’t tolerate Bryce Young slander because I don’t understand how anyone can hate this guy. Critiquing how he plays is one thing, but he genuinely seems like a good person. In Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins, the quarterback had 198 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Running back Rico Dowdle was a much-needed spark that Carolina needed to stay in the game; he had 206 yards and 1 touchdown.

There weren’t many people who thought the Panthers would beat the Dolphins, especially after Bryce’s fumble on the team’s first possession and an interception. Miami was up 17-0, and it looked like Tua and his guys were going to get their second win of the season (their first came after beating the New York Jets on MNF in Week 4).

Yet, the Panthers locked in, pulling off a 24-27 victory. Their record is currently 2-3.

Cam Ward gets his first NFL win, which is also the Titans’ first win of the season

It was the moment Tennessee Titans fans had been waiting for since Week 1: a win. Rookie quarterback Cam Ward had 265 passing yards and 1 interception, while running back Tony Pollard had 67 yards and 1 touchdown. Wide receiver Calvin Ridley’s 131 receiving yards also made a massive contribution to the team’s win.

Tennessee found a way to come back after it seemed like the Arizona Cardinals were about to have a win for sure. Their record now stands at 1-4, and they’ll face the Las Vegas Raiders next.

The Broncos and the Patriots both ended win streaks on Sunday

If you’re a Denver Broncos or New England Patriots fan, their wins on Sunday didn’t surprise you at all. However, for non-fans, it was truly a surprise that both ended win streaks.

The Broncos took on then-undefeated Philadelphia Eagles in a matchup that came down to the last second, literally. Bo Nix and Denver were up 21-17 with approximately one minute left in the fourth quarter. Jalen Hurts and the Eagles were moving the ball downfield, but Broncos defenders were on it. With a few seconds left, Hurts threw a Hail Mary pass, which almost ended in a miracle, but they came up short.

Later that night, the New England Patriots gave Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills their first loss of the season. Second-year quarterback Drake Maye had 273 passing yards, and wide receiver Stefon Diggs had 146 yards. The Bills scored 0 points in the first quarter while the Patriots’ kicker, Andy Borregales, aced a 30-yard field goal to give them 3 points. He would eventually ace a 52-yard field goal with about 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter that secured the Patriots’ win.

I’ve learned not to sleep on any team in the league — anything can happen during the season.
