Music is art and an outlet for emotions. Teaching it is harder than it seems. So when Chloe Bailey’s character in Peacock’s upcoming psychological thriller Strung gets the opportunity of a lifetime to teach what she loves, what could go wrong? A lot, actually.
While watching the trailer for Strung, directed by Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man) and written by Alan B. McElroy (Star Trek: Discovery), I found myself going, “Whoa.” Laila (Bailey) is a talented violinist who takes a prestigious job tutoring the gifted daughter of an influential and enigmatic family.
Based on the clips shown, stepping into their world opens a hole of unsettling secrets, forcing Laila to question her safety, dreams, and even sanity. In Bailey’s words via an Instagram post promoting the movie, she’s “fighting for her life!”
Alongside the triple threat, the cast includes Lynn Whitfield (A Thin Line Between Love and Hate), Lucien Laviscount (Scream Queens), Anna Diop (Us), Coco Jones (Bel-Air), and Romy Woods.
Tyler Perry and Jason Blum serve as producers. Strung will premiere at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF), celebrating its 30th anniversary, on May 27. It will then stream on Peacock on June 26.
Other things to watch on Peacock
Peacock has quickly become one of my favorite streaming services. The first Peacock original I watched was the limited series All Her Fault. Starring Sarah Snook, the Irvines’ world tumbles when their son, Milo, is kidnapped by a fellow mom’s nanny. I didn’t read the book of the same name, so the plot twist (I won’t spoil it if you haven’t seen it) was one of the best I’ve seen. Then I was so eager to watch Keke Palmer in The ‘Burbs that when I finished the season, I was mad I didn’t spread the episodes out longer.
The ‘Burbs follows Samira (Palmer), a new mom, wife, and attorney who moves to her husband Rob’s (Jack Whitehall) suburban hometown to give their son a better life. Secrets emerge when someone buys a creepy house across the street that once belonged to the family of Rob and Naveen’s (Kapil Talwalkar) missing childhood friend, Allison.
