When celebrities are asked which songs defined a decade, their answers can be hit or miss. While scrolling through Instagram, I saw a list of tunes Victoria Beckham called the soundtrack of the ‘90s. I was thoroughly impressed to see some of my favorites, which culturally shaped the music industry.
R&B and hip-hop thrived in the decade, and Beckham really captured that with her choices. She shared them in a Gap post on Sunday, April 26. There are 20 songs split into two sections, called DISC 1 and DISC 2.
Some classics include “Love Like This” by Faith Evans, “Crush on You” by Lil’ Kim, “He Wasn’t Man Enough” by Toni Braxton, “Can We Talk” by Tevin Campbell, “Do For Love” by 2Pac, “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” by D’Angelo, and “Mary Jane (All Night Long)” by Mary J. Blige.
The caption on Gap’s post says:
Victoria’s playlist. “This is the soundtrack to the ‘90s for me — which is also when I discovered Gap — and captures the nostalgia and confidence of that moment,” says @victoriabeckham. Songs that defined the ‘90s and early ‘00s. Performances that were ahead of their time and expanded the possibilities of soul, hip-hop, and pop. Tracks that sound as groundbreaking as ever.
I was genuinely surprised by how perfect this selection is, and how satisfying it is to see these hits continue to get the recognition they deserve. We’ve all been in department stores where the music is so loud you can barely think, but when classics like these are playing (clean versions, of course), I don’t mind lingering a little longer. The longer you stay, the more likely you are to find something to buy, which is exactly what the company hopes for.
It’s a win-win. I get to enjoy a mini jam session while shopping, and they make more sales.
Victoria Beckham also launched a new Gap collection.
Whether these tracks are Beckham’s personal favorites or just a smart way to promote her new Gap collection, the playlist is chef’s kiss, and so are some of the clothes. I wanted to buy the low-rise Capri Jeans from the sixth Instagram slide, but they were already sold out.
