The Wayans family mocked every popular horror movie you can think of in Scary Movie. The 2000 slasher parody, written by Shawn and Marlon Wayans (who also starred in the first and second installments), became a cult classic.
Now, a quarter of a century later, filming for Scary Movie 6 has wrapped, with June 12, 2026, as its release date. The original cast, including Regina Hall, Anna Faris, and Jon Abrahams, will return, with stars like Damon Wayans Jr. and Kim Wayans also set to appear.
Scary Movie 6 will mark the Wayans family’s return to the film series
Growing up, the Wayans family was responsible for a lot of laughs; they’re one of the most influential comedy families in the industry. From In Living Color to The Wayans Bros., the group of siblings was born to make millions cackle. That’s why it was painfully obvious when they left the Scary Movie film series after the second installment. The scenes in installments three through five didn’t hit like the first two.
Marlon Wayans, who created the franchise along with his brothers, explained many times why they were no longer associated with the film series over the years, saying it was due to creative and financial disagreements and that they were ultimately cheated out of a fair deal.
However, in October of 2024, Deadline reported that the brothers were returning. Eldest brother, Keenan Ivory Wayans, directed the first two but will serve as a producer on the upcoming release.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again.”
Scary Movie was a box office hit
In an Instagram post, Marlon Wayans called the newest addition to the film series a “multi-generational classic comedy.” As someone who has seen the first two installments, I have high expectations for the sixth. And audience turnout will be key to its success, given critics’ mixed response to the previous releases. Despite that, Scary Movie achieved major box-office success with a $19 million budget. The film grossed $278 million worldwide.
